How long have you been training in Taekwondo? And what got you started?
I started Rhee Taekwondo back in 1980 on the 1st of October when I was nearly 10 years old. My uncle Barry was an instructor. He was an ex-boxing champion, and very fit and motivated trainer. Sadly he was killed in a plane crash in 1986.
Highlights of your Taekwondo success?
Watching wayward young students develop into responsible and confident young adults through Taekwondo training and discipline.
Describe your first black belt grading, and what it took to get you there?
Gruelling, painful, awesome. It was a mixture of elation and relief when it was all over.
How often do you train? In Taekwondo? Gym? etc
Taekwondo, I instruct twice a week. I try to swim 1-2kms at the pool atleast 2-3 days a week. I also like to bike ride at least 1-2 times a week for about 20-30kms. I sometimes do some track work (ie. sprint training) 1-2 sessions a week weather permitting. Every now and then, I do some boxing sparring with the boys at the PCYC. In the summer I enjoy paddling my kayak at least once a week.
Favourite Taekwondo move or moves?
Flying side-kick is my favourite move. I also think running jumping back-kick is a pretty awesome looking maneuver, although it is much harder to perfect.
What are your goals in Taekwondo for 2009?
Pass my 3rd degree grading test.
What would you like to see more of or less of in United Taekwondo that could benefit members?
Definitely need more cheer girls for the blackbelts at gradings (just joking!)
Possibly another mid-year instructors seminar would be good.
Your favourite saying and what this means?
"Pain is weakness leaving your body."
In other words, train hard and enjoy the pain, it means you are getting stronger for it. Do not misinterpret this, I'm not talking about the bad, I just popped my shoulder pain - I mean the good, honest, I'm busting my arse off kind of pain.
I also like this saying -Â "In victory, be humble. In defeat, be strong. In all things be fair."Â I don't think I need to explain this to anyone.
Best advice you can give someone training and wishing to start training in Taekwondo?
Build your fitness base. Drill your techniques at slow and fast speeds every session. Train regularly, be consistent and have patience, results will follow. Enjoy your training sessions.
What other activities apart from Taekwondo do you enjoy?
Swimming, biking, running, kayaking, reading. Kicking the footy with my three boys. Walking the dogs with my daughter. Going to live concerts or theatre with my wife.
Favourite movie(s) and why?
Probably something like Troy or Gladiator. I just like that Ancient Warrior type theme.
Favourite food?
Oxtail stew or Baked Salmon with steamed asparagus and sweet potato.
With regards to Taekwondo where do you see yourself in 5 years?, 10 years?
I see myself as an old and wise instructor!
